Penyu Belimbing/ Leatherback Turtle

My brother once saw it in Rantau Abang, Terengganu in 1990. We were on a school trip to the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

He was among the fortunate ones to be in Group A and B, who stayed near the nesting beach, while I, in Group C, had to leave the beach earlier because our lodging is further (nearer to town).

At that time, I didn’t think that I had missed the last chance to see a leatherback. It was always in my mind that there will be another chance. Hey, it’s a large population in Rantau Abang, it won’t disappear that fast. EXTINCTION was never the word that crossed my mind. Not this magnificent reptile.

It’s too late to save the Leatherbacks now, but we still have the Greens and Hawksbills. Are we doing something to help them?

救鲨行动

世上有大约440种鲨鱼品种。其中有200++种被IUCN (The World Conservation Union) 列为面临绝种的种类。许多人因为JAWS这部戏对鲨鱼非常恐惧，认为鲨鱼很凶残恐怖。其实，鲨鱼并不会主动攻击人类，通常它们是因为觉得安全/生命受威胁而做出自然反击。追捕鱼类/其他海洋生物为食应该比追捕人类容易吧。
说实在，人类杀鲨鱼比鲨鱼杀人类多好多好多倍，是谁威胁谁？谁比较恐怖呀？
人类杀鲨鱼为得其翅。事实上，鱼翅没有特别的营养，也乏味道。

在这里，我dedicate以下的作品给所有鲨鱼研究、保育工作者，以及所有支持鲨鱼保育工作的人。

用纸皮做成椭圆盒子。


内层多加2~3层纸皮。用报纸条贴好。加上纸皮作鼻子。


再用更多报纸条贴好鼻子的形状。


用报纸条贴上纸皮剪成的尾巴。


背部及背鳍

加上一层纸泥。用纸泥塑一双翅，再用蛋糕刀弄3条印痕，鳃。


背鳍也一样。


待干后（2~3天），涂上2层胶漆。铅笔画上眼睛牙齿。


我的临时acrylic paint palette。


完成后，喷上一层lacquer。





鲨鱼来了。


由于鱼翅的来源不易追查，导致我们吃鱼翅时很难知道是否来自持续性鱼产(不是面临绝种的品种），所以还是选择不吃的好。
没有需求，供应自然会减少。

Turtles in Malaysia

There are 7 species of existing sea/ marine turtles in the world, and Malaysia waters host 4 of them (haha, 4?)

* Leatherback/ Penyu Belimbing (‘facing extinction’, but I ‘realistically’ say locally extinct liao)
* Green/ Penyu Agar
* Hawksbill/ Penyu Karah atau Penyu Sisik
* Olive Ridley/ Penyu Lipas – tak pernah pun aku dengar pasal penyu jenis ini bertelur kat mana-mana pantai Malaysia... Hmmmm...

婚礼

数年前两位同学在基督教堂中举行了他们的婚礼。
噔噔噔噔，在Bridal Corus音乐中，新娘步入教堂，缓缓走向新郎。

上个月邻居嫁女儿，在家门外设了帐篷接待宾客。新郎来到，站在帐篷外。
砰砰砰砰、啪啪啪啪、砰砰砰砰、啪啪啪啪，在马来皮鼓的敲击声中，新娘从家里走出来，步向新郎。

两场婚礼中，我感动万分，眼泪满眶。
新娘子离开了父母的庇荫，步向那个将会牵她的手、给她一辈子幸福的人。
我衷心祝福她们，和她们的伴侣白首偕老。

我在想，别人嫁女儿，我已这样感动流涕了。
如果有一天……
如果自己有幸有个女儿，为她披头纱时，我可能会把妆哭糊了。
不过，我想，有一个人应该会跟我一样 。

或许有过而无不及。
